Takahoa Bay

To create a weekend retreat for a busy professional couple. That every weekend would feel like a holiday and that the weekend home would be the polar opposite to their busy city apartment where they stay Monday - Friday.

The house was to be in harmony with the surrounding environment, overlooking the Kaipara Harbour, and blend in with the surrounding landscape in both form and function. The backbone of the house is the stack bonded block wall that divides the house from the rear sheltered pool courtyard and the home. Against the spine wall lies a long hallway along which vertical slot windows have been set at regular intervals allowing for views out. As well as providing circulation, the space accommodates a library which has strength as an architectural piece but is also an inviting and homely invitation to weekend living. For this project the site is “King” and the home was to be a servant to it.
